Chinese New Year: Brightwater Commons

The Annual Chinese New Year Festival at Brightwater Commons was this Saturday and there were plenty of festivities for the whole family. What I love about this venue is that it is family friendly with plenty of space and activities to keep people of all ages entertained.  A stage was erected on the grassy commons as well as shelters to keep people shielded from the summer sun. I bought some cheap and fantastic spring rolls and found a cool grassy patch to sit down and enjoy the festivities.

There was an archery demonstration, acrobatics, martial arts demonstrations, gymnastics, dances, competitions and plenty of games and prize givings.  I missed the dragon dance and some of the cool martial arts stuff (sidetracked by the Sandton sales) but did manage to see a few good shows and go for a walkabout to enjoy the festive atmosphere. There were plenty of stalls selling "year of the dragon" trinkets and a photo exhibition of china. However, I noticed the angry looking rainclouds looming overhead and managed to avoid most of the downpour.  That cut short my tour of the festivities, but I definitely will be looking forward to next year!

Sandton City (where I will be) is having their annual summer sidewalk sale! Starting 25 January 2012 until the 29 January 2012.

For a more chilled out affair, the high teas at the Wescliffe Hotel are always fun.  Check out the view (taken during Jacaranda season in November) :

44 on Stanley: a morning out

I went for a great Thai massage the other week at Zest Studios in 44 on Stanley. I would thoroughly recommend the place.  And afterwards, I went for a little walkabout to enjoy the lovely complex.  Pity I didn't have company, otherwise I would have definately stayed for tea and fresh bread at the superb Volvo Tello bakery. Next time....

Coconut Grove, Montecasino

Coconut Grove in Durban was a legendary hang-out to get the best (and hottest) bunny chow 24/7.  It has since closed down in Durbs, leaving a giant hole in every party goer's heart who now have only local garages to satisfy their post-clubbing munchies.  However, rising from the ashes Coconut Grove has emerged in Monte Casino and still offers some great Durban curries and bunny chows.  I really enjoyed my beans bunny, but G thought the mutton one could have been hotter.  Try it out for yourself:

Because every bar deserves its own red phone booth. Pretty cool place for drinks, snacks and chilling with friends.
