Voodoo Lily Cafe`

I should have reviewed this place months ago while it was still a secret gem. Well, the secrets out! The cafe` was reviewed in this month's Glamour mag, and I do agree with the glowing review it received. The food is delicious and wholesome (sandwiches, burgers, bruchettas, cheeses, salads - made with fresh, organic ingredients). I love the quirky decor, young and fresh ambiance and general good vibes. You can sit inside, or get some fresh air and chill outside.
I saw young couples, families, groups of friends all chatting and having a super time. The prices are reasonable, so it is worth a little visit.

Wolves

Wolves is a little cafe on the side of Corlett drive. It is funky, has free wifi and amazing red velvet cupcakes. The owner is in a band (Desmond and the Tutus), and is a really nice guy. The cafe often hosts free concerts and other parties. There are some parties where an entrance fee is charged, but it won't break the bank.

Balloon Ride

This is not a ride in a hot air balloon.  It is a helium balloon tied to a string with a pulley that takes you up and down.  While I am loathed to bring attention to this attraction, as I bought an inflated and misleading Groupon for it, I feel I would be omitting an interesting activity if I ignored it completely.
Here is the deal: a 15 minute balloon ride in a Hyundai sponsored helium balloon that hovers 120 above the ground.  It happens in Montecasion, Sandton and Soweto.  I went to the Montecasino one and had a nice view of the bird park, William Nichol, and the Magaliesberg mountain range.  It costs R75 for a normal ride, and R150 for a sunrise or sunset ride (which provides champagne and chocolates). I went on the sunset one, and the whole thing is pretty decent fun.  If you are a pensioner you pay R45.  There were alot of pensioners when I was there, and it is pretty tame.

October: the month that was

As we roll into November, I sit back and reflect on the awesomeness that was the month of October 2011.  It was spring and the city came alive with Jacarandas, thunderstorms, sunshine and a hub of activity. I did mention some of the happenings, but there were a few more which slipped under my radar. Notably, Winesense (the annual wine tasting festival) and the Oktober Bierfest (the annual German beer piss-up). As a caveat to my readers, I do not drink alcohol and tend not to notice alcohol related festivities.  Though, I promise to be more vigiliant to give everyone a fair heads up if anything similar comes around.  And if the drinking fests are done, there is always Winesens in Melrose Arch to indulge in some winetasting any day of the week.  But back to the topic! These are some of the fun times that I had during the month:

The Lion Park

yes folks, I finally made it here accompanied by my fearless fiance and my two intrepid sisters.  We paid our R175 entrance fee, which included a guided game drive and a "lion petting" session, and headed off.  I must say, having a mini-game park in the middle of the city is a bit of a mind trip. One minute you are passing shopping malls and the Northgate Dome and the next you are driving up a dirt road which takes you to a large fenced off area with several animal enclosures. It was a beautiful, hot day when went and as it was a Sunday the lions had just been fed and were lounging in the sun. We went merrily on our game drive, and I use the term "game drive" quite loosely as it was a 40 minute drive around fenced paddocks with large areas containing certain animals.  All the herbivores were in one paddock, the lions one, then the white lions another, the cheetahs had one and finally one with a pack of wild dogs. The lady doing the game drive was really knowledgeable and good and it was interesting to get up close to some of these animals.  However, I must say the experience was a bit artificial, Kind of like a large zoo in which you can drive your car in (you can take your own car in for R120, but as my partner's car had very low suspension we opted for the guided game drive in the hardcore jeep/truck/railed vehicle.) I would recommend all you city slickers to try it out, especially if you have never been on a game drive.  There is still something majestic about seeing these animals, albeit in a post lunch nap. Another interesting and touristy thing that we got to do was touch a baby lion.  It seems like a cute thing to do, but afterwards I kinda felt sorry for the poor thing. It was just trying to have a nap and then the whole day it has people coming along and touching it. Here is a photo of my experience.  The lion is a baby white lion. I imagine it was thinking: yes, touch me now my pretty but when I get bigger I will eat you.

Coldplay

I really enjoyed Coldplay. I was a fan when I was in high school but my affection for them faded after a while and I only went to the concert as my siblings were amped to go and required my chauffeuring/chaperoning/payment abilities.  However, I am glad I went. To summarise the experience: I was blown away. Chris Martin has incredible gravitas on stage and Coldplay are a phenomenal live act. There songs are sweet and rocky and emotionally stirring and to actually feel the bass from the band playing and hear the voices of 60 000 people singing alone was a moving experience. The vibe was excellent and everyone was excited and friendly and ready to sing along. To top it off, the band shot part of the video for the single Paradise at the Joburg concert. The best song, however, was Viva La Vida. The crowd went crazy and in the end Chris Martin had to calm everyone down to get to the next song. After the concert, the crowd continued with singing the chorus and the happiness followed you home :) Here is a pic of the concert.  You can see the giant bubbles that were tossed in the crowd and pulsed up and down during the show.

This Sunday G and I made our merry way to the rAge expo at the Coca Cola Dome as general observers. I was told that although the expo is usually dominated by gamers, there is a small anime, and other fanboy (think star wars) presence. The dome was transformed into a gaming wonderland, with gaming booths, dance mats, karaoke and a huge LAN in the middle. My cousin was at the LAN on Saturday until the early hours of the morning and again on Sunday. I asked him what it was like and he described it as "like the twilight zone but with gamers in instead of aliens". There were an army of gamers in the LAN, around 2000 at its height. I've never seen anything like it. Luckily, the air-con was working valiantly to balance the stench of the unwashed hoards. LANing is definately not for the faint hearted (or for those with an acute sense of smell).

I am not a gamer, but was pretty impressed by the spread. Yes, there was the general kitchness and commodification of gaming culture. You could buy anything, and even sign up to an online gaming lessons. This is the dark side of capitalism. It had to happen. Whenever someone finds something cool, someone else tries to make money from it. Maybe if I was a hardcore gamer I would be a little annoyed. But I just enjoyed the overall madness of noise, lights and wall-to-wall screens. There were kinect games, online games, console games, dance mats, sing-star-esque games... anything your could think of!  It was overall very fascinating.

The undoubtable highlight of the day for me was seeing two people dressed up as the Akatsuki from Naruto. Their costumes looked great and I would have loved to see more Cosplay. Come on fellow anime fans, we need to represent! I might even dress up myself next time!

As promised, the day was dominated by the gamers. There was a little anime and star wars memorabilia on sale,  but a little more would have been nice. I will keep a look out for anime and other fanboy forums (yes, star trek as well. Come out fans, I know you're there!)  I bought my sister a robot mouse who kinda looked like R2D2.  Check it out. G thinks its a bit weird but I think its a riot!

Well that's my rAge experience. Not bad in all.

Joburg Awesomeness: The List

My really close friend has moved up from Cape Town and is really excited to see the sights and bright lights of Johannesburg.  We got talking and I realized that in my three short years, and despite my preference of watching series on my couch during the weekends, I had actually done many cool things in the city.  It became too much to tell her everything in one conversation, so I have decided to draw up a list of cool places that she (other émigrés) could visit.  As an introductory point, I live in Illovo and have discovered that I don't have to go further than a 10 km radius to visit many fabulous locales.  So sorry if I have left out that amazing restaurant in the south of Joburg that your cousin loves.  If you are in Joburg, Sandton is the place to be.

The Johannesburg metro website has already compiled a great list of places (complete with address and phone numbers) that you could check out.  My list is slightly different as the places that I have listed are either my favorite, and come as a personal recommendation, or are places that I really want to see.  Bring change for the car guards (if you want to tip) and your camera!  So here goes!

44 on Stanley is a little nook in Stanley road that has cool, arty, little shops, an amazing bakery, coffee shops, flower stalls, clothing shops and other interesting little things.  The place has an urban chique to it and is very relaxed.  Go there for breakfast/brunch/coffee and a browse of all the creative artwork on display.  A good morning out!

Arts on Main

As one of my favourite places it has an entire post dedicated to it.  Arts on Main is an urban warehouse in the middle of the city that has been converted in art galleries and clothing stall.  On a Sunday, there is a lovely flea market with confectionary, pastries, flowers, vegan goodies, art, clothes, and other interesting things on sale.  Bring cash as very few stalls have card machines.

Grant often refers to this strip as "the Bermuda Triangle" as it is a bit of a weird place to find.  I type in "

, Greenside" on my gps and then keep an eye out for the strip of cool bars and restaurants.  Greenside used to be this really cool indie place but as my friend has bemoaned has been taken over by the popped collar jock crowd and have elbowed the indie kids out.  As a personal favour, if you visit Greenside, please don't pop your collar and behave like a yob. Much appreciated.

In terms of eating out, the strip has some good restaurant chains present: Fratelli's, Adega, Capellos, Doppio Zero, and the interesting Mama's Shebeen. 

The strip also has some great bars and clubs.  For dancing you have Toyo Star (house music, sometimes light rock, free some nights, other times pay up to R50 to enter, youngish crowd, good looking people), Gin (rock, pop, a bit of an electronic mix, student type crowd, a few older people, free), and the Office (a bar essentially, the music is rock, electronic, pop and the crowd is young, professional and well polished, dress decently, free to enter).

Amazing sushi!  Hokkaido (the best sushi restaurant in Joburg, a little pricey); Real Sushi (great sushi, reasonably priced); Kung Fu Kitchen (reasonable quality, great prices); Rainbow (haven't been, but have heard service is meh, food is good, a little pricey).

There are a ton of bars and restaurants in the street including some pizza, pasta, and falafel places.  I just go for the sushi.

The Jolly Roger is a legendary pizza place and watering hole.  I've never been (too many teenagers falling around the place).

Melrose Arch

A little enclave of shops, apartments, offices and restaurants, Melrose Arch is a classy hangout.  The allure of this place is the fact that you can sit outside, surrounded by pretty, well-heeled people and have a lovely meal or drink. I love the shopping and eating out.  Favorite restaurant here: the Orient for dinner and JB's for breakfast.  Pricey but amazing food!  Tasha's is also good.  My friend has her farewell at a wine tasting place, "Wine sense" and those who indulged loved it!  The shops range from a concept Edgars store, a great Woolworths, and some nice boutiques.  Melrose Arch is well suited to fun morning having breakfast and shopping with your girlfriends, or a romantic dinner or breakfast with your special person.  Check it out!

Hyde Park Mall

While we are on the subject of shopping malls, Hyde Park Mall has a great selection of restaurants and classy boutiques.  I have seen several celebrities (in the Miss SA sense) here. There is Red Chamber, a Chinese restaurant, which is great (also pricey, and difficult to get into unless you make reservations).

The Southern Sun Hotel at the Mall has a great bar that is really classy and comfy.  I met up with some friends here, and rubbed shoulders with many young professionals and businessmen.  The grapevine tells me that many business deals go down here, so if you are interested in that kind of thing.

The cool eating out China town is where you go if you are craving authentic Chinese food.  The places are grungy, and the menus aren't always in English, but the food is great and really interesting.  Bring cash as there are usually no cash machines.

Brightwater Commons

A family hangout, but with a cool outdoorsy vibe.  There are flea market stalls, cool gaming, comic book and anime shops and a few chain stores.  I love it when they have events.  The Thai festival and Chinese New year celebrations were so much fun!

Joburg Awesomeness: Arts on Main

I live in the city of Johannesburg, in the beautiful country of South Africa.  Johannesburg, or "Joburg" as it is affectionately called, is an urban jungle: a surging, gritty, bustling metropolis and South Africa's (and Africa's) economic capital. That being said, it is also awesome.

There are so many incredible things to do in Joburg that I have decided to write a series on it.  What the urban adventurer can get up to in this fabulous city.

My first totally awesome thing to do is the Sunday flea market at Arts on Main.  Arts on Main is in itself a totally cool hangout. The venue holds several galleries and urban chic clothing stalls.  On Sunday the place transforms into the boho/glam hangout of the young and trendy.  This is the place that cool office mate yours buys their vegan chocolate and too-cool-for-school vintage slacks. My favourite experience was sitting under a cluster of olive trees drinking Ethiopian coffee freshly roasted and ground in an Ethiopian coffee ceremony.  In the middle of the city!

Bring cash as most places don't have credit card machines.  Then eat your vegan chocolate truffles and seaweed snacks whilst lying on the grass next to other pretty people.
