Meeting of the Waters & Lily Pads

Meeting of the Waters

In Manaus, we were lucky enough to go and see the meeting of the waters.  The dark waters of the Rio Negro and sandy coloured waters of the Amazon River (or Rio Solimoes) run side by without mixing for about 6 km.  This phenomenon is due to the differences in temperature, speed, and water density of the two rivers.  The Rio Negro is hotter (we checked) than the Amazon.

Our brief time in the sandy waters of the Amazon. The banks of the Amazon are a haven for mosquitoes while the opposite banks of the Rio Negro are mozzie free.

Angry rainclouds beckoning.

 Amazonian Lily Pads

The Victoria, or giant water lily is the biggest lily and lily pad in the word and grows the still waters of the Amazon basin. There are really beautiful and we caught them just about as they were about to be destroyed by a rainstorm and decay.  For more information, check out wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giant_lilies and David Attenbourgh's series the Private Life of Plants.
